The First Encounter

It happened on Saturday, 3rd September, 2010, in ECC Geelong at 9:15am. Su-Ann was visiting Australia for 10 weeks when decided that she would follow her former church member, Christina Chong, from Malaysia to church that morning for their weeekly music practise.

For Boaz, it wasn't like any other Saturday because he knew that she had arrived in Australia. Prior to Su-Ann's arrival, their mutual friend, Christina, mentioned to Boaz and a couple others that she had a friend who was coming. He remembers distinctively three things that Christina used to describe her; she plays the piano, she is Amoz's age (Boaz's older brother) and that she was going to Hillsong for a year in 2011. However, these three things that she described never left Boaz and knew immediately in his heart that there is something "special" about this girl. Was it God nudging him saying "get her tiger"? Or was it just Boaz's infatuation with every available girl? We'll never know...but what we do know...is that something special did happen.

Meeting Su-Ann for the first time was absolutely nerve wrecking for Boaz. The Tuesday prior to the Saturday they met, Boaz thought he was going to meet her for the first time in their weekly church Prayer Meeting. You see, Su-Ann had arrived on the Monday but they only met that following Saturday. He remembers walking down the hall towards the room with his heart thumping harder with each step. To his relief (because he would've made an absolute fool of himself), she wasn't there. However, later that Saturday when they did meet, he was somewhat more composed but still an absolute wreck inside. He recalls as she walked through the front door that he heard angels singing as the goddess entered. He was taken back and somehow managed a short and manly "hello" when he was finally introduced to by Christina.

It wasn't quite the same for Su-Ann. She remembers that Saturday in a blur and barely remembers Boaz being there. Fortunately for Boaz, Su-Ann was warmly greeted and welcomed by the entire church music team which gave his poor racing heart an opportunity to calm itself down.

The following day, Su-Ann recalls a clearer picture of "that guy". After the church service, they had an opportunity to chat where Boaz made a deep and lasting impression on Su-Ann that will always be remembered as "the day Boaz got Su-Ann's Attention". Desperate to find a way to talk to her further, he cleverly used a decoy to get hold of her email address - the upcoming Mooncake Celebration annually hosted by his church. Being the smooth talker that he is, he asked if she was willing to help out on the piano. Despite being on holiday, she decided that she was going to be a blessing to the church and immediately agreed. Excited, he told her that he would get her email address from Christina so she didn't have to worry about anything. Unbeknownst to Boaz, she too was looking for some way to get hold of Boaz's contact so to continue their getting to know each other. Fortunately for Su-Ann, she didn't have to do anything - he did all the work...just the way it's meant to be! (according to Su-Ann).

They continued their friendship via MSN where they would chat well into the night. Chemistry was not lacking in the early goings as they struck up a strong friendship through their common interests, beliefs, passions and most importantly, desire for God. Their friendship never wavered as they maintained contact with each other daily despite Su-Ann's 1 week trip with Eddy and Christina Chong to Adelaide. They still reminisce of the one time in Adelaide when they were chatting with each other late into the night. The Chongs had gone to bed and so to avoid waking people up, Su-Ann tucked her laptop under the kitchen sink where she'd Skype with Boaz into the early morning. It was from that moment on where they realised that no matter where they were in the world, they would do whatever it takes so they could be together.
